I so enjoyed reading this! You are spot on!
I loved the advice to make a meal together because the taste might help you hold your tongue. I always say things I regret, so maybe I need a spare Brie wheel in my purse at all times to prevent this.

Now, to be really super annoying here. I can tell you had a lot of passion writing this post, because I saw 2 typos and I NEVER see typos with you. You're normally perfect, but when talking about love, the heart moves faster the brain. And we like that.

My boyfriends (of 5+ years) parents do this kind of thing too - they drink champagne and talk things over. In fact their son is the one to keep them well in stock with the bubbly (as the parents do this quite frequently)

I have always thought that it is super cute how they get along. Now I have one more proof of what it takes.

I really loved this insight to relationships - at first I didn't take the intro seriously but see? This is my first comment yet I have been reading for months now :)

Hi Garrett,

Thanks for the lovely read. My partner and I are finally moving into our first place together in March (we bought the place last Spring) which has given me a lot of time to think about all the reasons why we shouldn't and be completely paranoid in general. It's a great reminder that even though he can't figure out the vacuum, is very possessive of the tv remote and has the WORST gas EVER, he is patient and loving and kind. So Thanks :)

I was sitting here nodding my head as I read every statement in this post. When I get upset with the boyfriend I just calmly let him know that something bothered me, then I give him a hug and prepare a nice meal and move on with the evening. I used to yell, spend half of the evening being passive aggressive, or try to make my "other" feel less than. Now that I don't do that, I am in a relationship I'm happy with. It's not perfect, but it's what works right now. That's all I need.

your post struck me on a number of levels - painful in someways but that doesn't mean it's "not good" or important. though lord i wish i had had some of that insight 20 yrs ago....
