Your mom is a salmon cake.

I shit you not, this actually happened today.

Silly Man: Hey, you bake a lot right? You're always bringing in the baked goods?

Me: Yes, that would be me.

Silly Man: I had a quick question, I was wanting to do a nice dinner for a date I have tomorrow and was thinking of making a salmon cake.

Me: I'm sorry...? (One, this is not baking. Two, since when were salmon cakes synonymous with trying to get some on a romantic date?)

Silly Man: You know, a cake made from salmon.

Me: I think you have the wrong idea about salmon cakes. They aren't actually cakes, they're like crab cakes. You know, like patties of fish.

Silly Man: Well, that sounds horrible. Why would anyone eat that?

Me: As opposed to like, a birthday cake with salmon?

Silly Man: Well, it seems silly to call it a salmon cake.

Sure does apparently.

  1. I just get this mental image of a cake with a whole raw salmon sticking out... nasty.

  2. ROTFLMAO!!!

Being a guy who loves to bake I often walk into the room to: "Hey your that guy who's REALLY into cooking and stuff right? I mean you like to cook?" You can just see the stereotypes flying through their minds.

    It's hilarious :)

  3. Someone sounds like they were two fins short of a full salmon cake.

  4. that's hilarious. it's funny how little people know about food. my husband thought pie weights were something really heavy you put on a pie to make it "more thin."

  5. I would almost bet money that someone, somewhere, has tried to make a dessert cake that contains salmon.
Which in no way means to validate the foolio in this story.

  6. I'm actually laughing out loud at this. How could anyone ever think that a cake made of salmon would help him get lucky???? Oh my god.

  7. how do you find these people?!?!

  8. It's funny how he wanted a cake made from salmon, yet was digusted when he found out they were a variation of a crab cake. what a terd.

  9. I once made a seafood cheesecake that included salmon, but still, not quite the same thing. Great story!

  10. Hilarious!

You are truly a culinary dunce magnet. A few more of these and you have a book, my fiend.

  11. I can't believe that happened...hilarious!

  12. I live at the confluence of the Pacific Ocean and the Columbia River so, of course, I have a copper mold shaped like a salmon. When I read the title, my first thought was: I could totally make a cake in that! With strawberry frosting, maybe. grin

  13. I have people say stupid things to me about baking all the time, but your story definitely tops anything I have heard!

  14. You certainly work with some odd people.

  15. well... salmon mousse/salad can be formed into a cake. But you still run into the same issue of... it's not cake as a baked, tasty delight. It's still... cold seafood. That could potentially be fried, but unlikely.

  16. I bet the eat beast would love a salmon cake! :0)

  17. Bahahahaha I wish I could meet someone with that outlook on life... so entertaining :D
